comment What's the difference between 2-row and 6 row base malt?
I think this is a dupe of homebrew.stackexchange.com/q/367/93

comment How to brew a Low-Carb Beer?
to clarify do you mean to add the pound of honey on brew day (i.e. at the end of the boil), or do you mean add it to the fermenter several days later when the yeast activity seems to die down?

Agreed, although from my initial research it looks as though the situation may be similar to travel with firearms. As long as you are legal at your origin and your destination it's ok to travel through intervening states. Travel through means stops for gas, food, sleep but little else (no stopping at tourist destinations, extended visits, etc.)

That makes sense, I guess I didn't specify exactly when I'm traveling - the last week of March - so I'm not anticipating heat being a problem. I guess I should just check the weather forecast and plan a route based on temperature (will make the driving easier anyway).

I can certainly choose a more Southern route in order to try to avoid temperature extremes, but on that topic: is the main worry there just the expanding volume of frozen beer cracking the bottles or is there potentially some effect on the beer itself?

comment Baking yeast for brewing?
Why bother: because sometimes the homebrew supply store closes and I feel like brewing with what I have on hand. Also, I'd like to explore different ingredients that deviate outside the stock recipes (see homebrew.stackexchange.com/q/524/93 for an example of this line of inquiry).

comment Bubble, Bubble, Toil = Trouble? Brewing's Carbon Footprint
Check out purposeenergy.com They are creating a technology that harvests methane from spent grain. They are currently building a 2 Billion BTU plant at the Magic Hat brewery in VT; they'll use the brewery's waste to power the brewery.

comment What are some alternatives to hops?
I used perhaps 25 tea bags in a 5 gallon batch, and I think it was too much. A heavier beer or less tea would have produced a better result.

comment Boiling with lid on or off?
@Morgan - I believe that technically gravity is a measure of everything in the mixture. If the DMS is of sufficient quantity and with significantly different mass than water, it would affect gravity. But I think it's probably in such small relative quantity that gravity effects are negligible.

Interesting, never knew that about DMS but it makes sense that it can escape with the steam. Does the DMS affect the gravity, or is it more of a micro-substance that just affects flavor?
