Brewing hand-crafted beer

comment How to make the best beer with arduino?
There is a brewery controller out there called Brewtroller that is a custom arduino board. It's open source hardware and software. They have a version to automate your brew process and a version to automate fermentors (like a fermenting fridge). www.brewtroller.com

comment Why is my starting gravity low?
Great answer. I agree, start with grain crush.

comment Why is a carboy used for secondary fermentation?
@brewchez Perhaps "extraordinary" is too strong, but plastic buckets let in more oxygen over time than most other vessels. I don't mean to say you can't make great beer with them, but you should be aware. There's a great chart halfway down www2.parc.com/emdl/members/apte/flemishredale.shtml showing different oxygen permeability over time.

comment Why is a carboy used for secondary fermentation?
@DustinRasener Moving the beer to another container won't clear the beer any better or faster than leaving it alone.

comment When bottle conditioning, when should I re-yeast, and how much yeast should I add
It carbonated just fine, no extra yeast needed.

comment Homebrew sanitisation in a Pinch
@tkone yup, you probably should rinse which is more or less what John Palmer said in that quote. Bleach would be a last resort for me, but it seemed like a perfect solution to the question.

comment How to use Tart Cherries
@dana I would probably treat them the same, yes. BUT, I've never actually done a sour beer, so perhaps you've found yourself another question.

comment [WIKI] Fermentation Temperature Control Methods
@C4H5As the reason to tape your probe to the carboy is that you want to measure the temperature of fermentation, not the temperature of the fridge. You might not notice a large difference most of the time, but when you're first normalizing the temperature of the beer and as the yeast is ramping up your bottle of water will be significantly behind the temperature of the beer.

This is what I ended up doing; it works great.

comment Adding Sugar to Secondary to Create a Layer of CO2?
I agree; there's rarely a need to seconday.

comment Wrong yeast…cloudy beer?
Yeah, dry hopping will make the beer somewhat cloudy, and that's just fine. In fact, a lot of folks expect a cloudy IPA.

comment 90-minute boil for pilsner malt?
No, with Pilsner malt you really do need 90 minutes with a rolling boil. As brewchez said, it has far more DMS precursor than a regular 2-row.

Where did you hear that electric elements don't suffice? Do you mean electric stoves don't suffice?

comment Do you keep your wine/beer making records online?
Yeah, I've been thinking about tossing 'em up on google docs and see if they convert correctly.

comment Do you keep your wine/beer making records online?
I have an excel sheet I keep using. It has a bunch of formulas built in for mash temp & volume, etc.

comment Why my homebrewed lager beer bottles explode?
Well, technically you're starting up a mini-fermentation to bottle condition anyway. Were you able to smell or taste any of the beer from the foamy bottle? Does it smell or taste off in any way? That would be one indication of a bacteria.

Pardon my ignorance, but what's a co2 syphon bulb?

comment No-rinse acid sanitizer - is there a risk?
Agreed; the key is to make sure you make the right concentration. The directions on the bottle are super clear & easy.
