comment Performing a hop boil seperate from the wort boil.
he's saying do a short boil with them. I would expect your boils to be less than 15 minutes for getting the hop flavour or less than 5 minutes for getting the hop aroma.

comment Is there an optimal bottle size?
(as an aside) I've never lamented too greatly the loss of the bottom portion of my beer.

obvious note (that sometimes is easy to overlook), you should sanitize the beer thief before using it. (or sanitize your hydrometer if you're putting it directly into the fermenting beer)

Brian, I'm with yhw42, don't worry too much about the suger. You'll end up with a less alcoholic beer. Just call it a session pilsner and you're fine. As long as you didn't throw in the sanitizer you should end up fine. Does the beer in your bucket look kinda like this? jimsbeerkit.co.uk/images/brewing_24hr_yeast_head.jpg

comment What is a good definition of beer?
I thought the restriction was to only barley, [from wikipedia] "...The restriction of grains to barley..." I am very likely misunderstanding the law. Do you have any clarification?
