comment What are the practical differences between leaf hops and hop pellets?
Definitely in general, dry hopping was the only thing I'd found so far comparing the two. What I wanted to make sure was that I wasn't overlooking something like utilization that would make comparing 1 lb pellets to 1 lb leaf more difficult than the obvious cost and size differences.

+1 for your optimism, space is my only limiting factor on buying more hops!

comment how much air would I need to move to be able to brew in my basement?
I followed the instructions on theelectricbrewery, but used a vastly reduced set of parts, and was able to spend closer to $300, vs the thousands he spent. That was $300 to convert, the controller is expensive, but well worth it. If you don't already have a 220v hot liquor tank, trust me, you need one. That being said, you'll likely still need venting.

comment Is there an optimal bottle size?
Please tell me, how do you acquire 190 ml bottles? I like this idea, especially for brews I'd like to keep for a year or two.

comment What makes an addition good for a basic wheat beer?
Your question title sounds way more vague and subjective than your actual question. You may want to re-phrase with something like, "What additives compliment a wheat beer?" You want to state what you're looking for. How long you've brewed, and the obvious fact you're looking for suggestions, can be details in the body.

comment Does keeping a beer cold significantly preserve fresh hop aroma?
I like your answer, and I haven't had the discipline to keep enough of my IPA around to test this time. Maybe next time (unlikely as IPA's are delicious)

comment How many times can I re-use oak cubes?
brewchez I'm confused, I thought tannins are exactly what you wanted extracted from the oak.

comment Is a taste-test at bottling time indicative of the end result?
Completely agree with Denny. I would recommend tasting every batch at bottling time, and not trying to come to any conclusions at all until you've brewed quite a few and know what to expect.

comment When adding grain to mash tun for second runnings, how long should I let the new grain mash?
Just brewed it, and did a double batch sparge. Color was definitely stronger in the second sparge (of the "second" runnings). I also waited 15 minutes after adding water before draining. So far, it's looking like a good method to me. I think Denny is right though, I think I could get away without it, but seems like the color is benefiting, if nothing else.

I definitely appreciate the input. As it turns out, my stout recipe has been brewed three times, and I love it. You're absolutely correct, and a full pound of black is alot. This is based off Papazian's Silver Dollar porter. I should call it porter, but that gets into a different type of argument.

comment How do you come up with a recipe to use for “Second Runnings”?
Also, beware, there are quite a few mistakes in those tables. I'm assuming that the general trend is correct.

comment IPA recipe left very sweet, little bitterness or aroma
Good catch on the DME vs liquid. Jarrod, if you're new and haven't already purchased a hydrometer, I can't encourage you enough to get one. I spent too many brews without one, and when things go well, you can get away with it, but when they don't, you MUST have one to begin diagnosing problems.

Also, please don't forget that high-gravity wort can be delicious without diluting as well.

comment Should we primary ferment in carboys prior to transfer into an oak barrel for a solera?
We course corrected on the day before the brew, transferring to the barrel this weekend.

Ah yes, I remember those days...thanks for the clarification.

comment What is the purpose of dry hopping in intervals (multiple additions)?
Great link. I'm still perplexed how hops interact differently in small amounts repeatedly instead of all at once, as Denny and others obviously believe they don't.

It'd probably be helpful if you can list as much detail as you have about what you did.

This really should be an update to your existing question, as I believe it's the same.

Looks interesting, I'd recommend putting the link to finack.com/beerhacker/frak. Just curious, why do you heat inside a refrigerator?
