Engineer by degree, but I code for a living. Recently switched to using a tablet for leisure internet, like this site, but the on-screen keyboard is horrible, so please forgive my missing letters and things!

Drop a cheap 12 volt bilge pump in a cooler with fed with hose water at the start thru to your cleaning bin. Then switch to recirculating with ice at the end. This will save a lot of water.

I'm doing something similar. But instead of fishing later, I use dental floss, then end of which is outside the carboy (the carboy topper still seals fine)

comment How fast should I run water through my wort chiller?
To really answer your question, we'd need to know how much you value your time as compare to how much you value your water. The approved answer assumes your time is more valuable than your water. Don't underestimate agitating the chiller, which makes a big difference.

Right Dustin, but "No" is sort of a boring answer, hehe.

comment Dry hopped pellets in a keg without bag
Agree with the 'blow out any hop material...' I had this happen at a friend of mine's house just before a big party. I don't think he dry hopped a whole bunch, but what we did, and it worked, was to rig the CO2 to the output of the corney keg, so that CO2 was forced down the dip tube. The first pint or two could be eaten with a spoon, but it flowed. And the party went on with the keg pouring.

Or, if you don't care to see bubbles, just put some aluminum foil over the top with a rubber band (you really don't need an air lock unless you get a charge off seeing bubbles).

Went with lactic acid from LHBS.

Yeah, they have a purpose to denature it with ethanol, hehe. But that added 'poison' is called out on the label. A company I used to work for sold gallons of stuff for the same price as two ounces, the same MSDS. Just called it something else. But you're right, unless there's a definitive food grade, I'm not doing it.

comment What software do most brewers use?
I've had it up to here with BeerSmith2 in that it's backwards (you enter an efficiency and it forces that down, instead of entering the data and calculating the efficiency). What spreadsheet do you use?
