Hydrometer, and it would of been after the sugar. I mix the beer and sugar by pouring in the sugar and stirring them.

Yeah I put them in right at the end of the boil, only had .3 oz of hops for a 2.5 gallon batch and mashed the pears up a bit before adding but I left the entire pears in the fermenter. It fermented well for about 3-4 days and now is just waiting to be bottled in another week.

This is exactly what I did, luckily there were only about 10 bottles left in the batch. Every one that I opened shot about half the bottle out in foam. Some shot up to 3 inches above the opening!

I Think it was actually the brown bottle in the front (you can see the top still capped) that exploded and took the green one with it.
