Well, today is brew day and no one seems to know, so I guess I'll find out. I'll post an answer after it's ready in a few months. If anyone else has thoughts in the meantime, feel free to write in...

I'm glad people seem to be doing it - I guess I was just curious on a theoretical level, but I agree with everyone so far - I've thrown 'em in after the response in April and also haven't seen any problems.

It was a pretty long time to sit, but that maibock is clear and beautiful! I had a feeling this would happen right after I asked, but I woke up this morning and there's now some slow bubbling action - looks like it just took a little while. Thanks for the link to Brew Strong episode; I missed that the first time around but I will go check it out.

comment Hops in the compost?
Good point - I guess I could've just thrown them in there to see, but thought that was worth a question at least. I had seen them listed as alright to compost in the Fischer's "Homebrewer's Garden" also, but I can't remember where I saw the recommendation to leave them out; I'll come back and leave a link if I can find it. Thanks,
